Digital Arrest
Digital Arrest, a cyber-attack is a crime where a fraudsters/ scammers call the victims and pretend it as they are government officials, and the victims phone number is found involved in false/wrong activity and they will digitally arrest victim and block victims number and sometimes they dressed and change their background as a police officials and do a video call.
Preventive Measures
Verify Identities: Always authenticate to identity of individuals claiming to be officials by contacting the relevant agency directly using official contact information.
Stay Informed: Be aware that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not conduct arrests or demand payments over phone or video calls. Government agencies never do a WhatsApp call or Video Call.
Protect Personal Information: Do not share sensitive personal or financial details over unverified calls or messages.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you receive such communications, report them immediately to local police or cybercrime authorities.
Recent Incidents
- Two individuals from Malappuram were arrested for defrauding a woman of ₹4.12 crore. They posed as Delhi Police officers, falsely claimed her bank account was linked to fraudulent activities, and foreced her into transferring funds for “verification.”
- A 26-year-old woman was duped of ₹1.7 lakh after scammers, posing as officials, accused her of involvement in a money laundering case. They coerced her into transferring money and performing acts on a video call under the threat of arrest.
- A 90-year-old man lost over ₹1 crore to fraudsters who, impersonating CBI officers, placed him under “digital arrest” for 15 days, falsely accusing him of drug-related offenses.
